Meghan Trainor album review

Meghan Trainor’s “All about the bass” is one of the most recognizable songs in the charts at the moment, and has topped the charts in 58 countries!

The 21 year-old star has gone multiplatinum in territories across the globe, and has been nominated for the prestigious “Song of the year” award at the Grammy’s, Meghans unstoppable success is clear for all to see!!

Here are my thoughts on the LP which is released Monday 26th Jan – 9/10.

1. Interlude – A nice brief bouncy beginning into the album, catchy, this is something I haven’t heard on an album before, and it grabs my attention straight away to lead nicely on to the first proper track of the album.

2. All about that bass  -This is the song which has made Meghan Trainor an international superstar. It uses an infectious beat that immediately gets into you head, whilst the lyrics have a clear moral that girls shouldn’t worry about their size, and that everyone is perfect how they are. This song is just brilliant and everybody knows the lyrics, and this is why it is so popular.

3. Dear Future Husband – The start of the song showcases Meghans brilliant voice before leading into a very bluesy beat that I can just envisage the masses dancing to, I was cooking whilst listening to this song and found myself dancing around the kitchen whilst clicking my fingers, heaven knows what my housemates thought I was doing!, brilliantly catchy and a something like you would hear on a chick flick when the girl is looking for her dream guy, I found myself fist pumping telling myself things will be alright!

This song uses the catchiness that “all about that bass” is renowned for, and I can see this being a great hit.

4. Close your eyes – Meghan’s vocals in this are just magnificent, I feel as though this is the song that showcases she isn’t just a one trick pony with the bouncy, pop song. This puts her on the map as somebody that can match anyone out there vocally, and the lyrics again have a very deep, but uplifting feeling to them blimy, four songs in and I feel like this is an emotional rollercoaster, albeit a very positive one.

5. 3AM– From almost what seems like a power ballad, we move to a song which starts out very rappy, but I cant express how much Meghans vocals again have impressed me. I think this song relates to anyone who has been in love and lost this love, and maybe has had a couple two many drinks and cannot help but text the person they have lost. This is the point of the song, it relates to everyone, it made me go back to a time in my life where I have done this exact thing. A song like this is exactly what every album needs, brilliant song writing.

6. Like im gunna lose you – Listening to this song is like listening to the first dance at a wedding, the way it has been written again is near perfect, can make you almost a bit emotional, but in such a good way (pass me the tissues) I can just see a bride and groom dancing to this song, it has a very soft beat to it and with the mix of Meghan voice, and that of the wonderful John Legend, I cannot say anything else other than I predict this song to be another hit.

7. Bang Dem Sticks – Why did I find myself attempting to do a seductive dance to this song (albeit very unsuccessfully) this is definitely a song for the younger generation, with lyrics containing, the way I read it, a lot of euphemism’s, but hey, who doesn’t enjoy a song like that? Another brilliantly catchy song from Meghan here, with very infectious lyrics.

8. Walkashame – I think this may be one of my favourite songs on the album, I love the Jazzy overtones to this song, and again I think the majority of people can relate to this song. The piano section in the song, companied by Meghans strong vocals makes this song, in my eyes, one of the strongest pieces on the album, which is saying a lot considering I have enjoyed every song.

9. Title – This is a similar song to Walkashame but a song that has a bit of humour in it with some of the lyrics. The rhythm of the song again is very appealing too.

10. What if I – This song is almost like I have stepped back in time a little bit, the vocals are very modern but the backing track has a feel of the 60s to me. Another slow dance song, I can see this filling a dance floor at maybe a school prom, or a party. This is another showcase that Meghan is somebody that can reach out to varying audiences from different generations, I can say that my grandmother would find this song as appealing as I do.

11. Lips are Moving – (Watch the video above)!! This is a simply a brilliantly sassy song, that has a very similar rhythm to “All about the bass” and I think we all agree this is what Meghan does well. She even jumps genres of music in this song, from rapping at one stage, to a strong vocal the next- personally I love this in an artist, its so different from the monotone one genre singer, and Meghan is the polar opposite from this, and this song is living proof.

12. No Good for you – Girls that have had heartbreak and are still upset about this, then you need to listen to this song! The lyrics potentially are quite downbeat at points (you been acting so sad) but the beat of the song uplifts this totally. The lyrics are memorable, the vocal I found slightly different from other tracks on the album, but different in such a positive way.

13. Mr Almost – when the song first started, I must admit I wasn’t immediately drawn to it, but a minute in I found myself singing along, whilst finger clicking to the beat. And this is what Meghan does best, you cannot help but sing along and click along, a nice section from Shy Carter also, especially the ending. As the song went on I enjoyed this a lot more.

14. My Selfish Heart – I absolutely loved the beginning of this song. This is almost sultry and not as catchy as Meghans other tracks, but I really do feel this works well, there are catchy bits in the song but it is nice to have a song like this in the album, the song really made you listen to the lyrics and understand the thoughts behind it, and I amazingly found it quite relaxing, all in all this is a great song.

15. Credit – Oh wow, plainly, I just love this. I love how different it is to anything in the market at the moment, this really does have a 60s feel to it, Meghan clearly has musical knowledge and this song is just brilliant in every way the tune may be as catchy or even more catchy than all about the bass, the lyrics are so the opposite to the beat of the song, that it just fits in perfectly. Definitely my favourite song on the album.

I have to admit that I didn’t think I would enjoy this album as much as I have done, I truly believe with the range of songs that are featured in this album, it will appeal to the mass market, even with some songs showing a bit of a niche. I have to credit Meghan Trainors voice, which in every song was just dazzling, there was not one song in which I thought was weak.

The song writing was particularly clever, it was almost like a story of her life so far, this appeals to everyone and relates to everyone. I have no doubt this album will be a major success across the globe, she’s all about that bass, and that bass is definitely going to stay!
